If you run an integration firm, you know the math. Your Crestron programmer is probably your most expensive employee, your hardest to replace, and the single biggest bottleneck in your project pipeline. When they are on vacation, projects stop. When they leave, you are in crisis.

The certification path reflects this complexity. Crestron's hierarchy runs from DMC-E-4K through Certified Programmer to Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond Certified Master. Platinum certification alone requires nine or more annual Masters Classes plus a final exam that takes up to three months to complete.
The labor crisis is structural
The shortage of qualified AV programmers is not a hiring cycle. It is a demographic and structural problem. Herman Integration Services described it plainly when announcing their Field Nation partnership: the AV industry faces a structural labor shortage due to demographic shifts, at a time when demand is accelerating.
The AVIXA Pro AV Business Index shows the AV Employment Index declining from 54.4 in January 2026 to 52.5 in February. Above 50 still indicates growth, but the downward trajectory signals a cooling market where employers are struggling to find skilled workers.
Meanwhile, competitor platforms are moving to more accessible languages. QSC Q-SYS uses Lua 5.3. Extron's ControlScript uses Python 3.5 with VS Code support. Both are better served by existing AI tools. Crestron's proprietary SIMPL ecosystem has no significant commercial AI tooling. That is the gap.
